The commercial vehicle sector is an important pillar of German industry and logistics infrastructure. It enables the transportation of goods and people in local and long-distance traffic and is closely intertwined with central economic sectors such as construction, trade, agriculture and industry. With an annual turnover of over 35 billion euros in vehicle construction alone and a dense network of suppliers and service companies, the sector is of great economic importance. Germany is a global leader in the production and export of trucks, vans, buses and special vehicles. The industry is facing a double transformation: ecological and digital.

Industry in transition

What are the current challenges in the commercial vehicle industry?e?

The industry is caught between technological upheaval and increasing cost and competitive pressure. The decarbonization of road freight transport – for example through battery-electric or hydrogen-based drives – is becoming a regulatory necessity, but requires enormous investments in product development and infrastructure. At the same time, the requirements for digitalization, connectivity and automated driving are increasing. Volatility in global supply chains, rising material costs and changing mobility behavior are calling established business models into question.

Strategies for the future

What is the current need for adjustment and optimization?

Manufacturers and system providers in the commercial vehicle sector must adapt their structures and processes in a targeted manner in order to remain successful in a fundamentally changing market environment:

  • Technology offensive in the powertrain:
The transformation to zero-emission drives is irreversible. Companies must invest in a technology-neutral manner – from BEVs to FCEVs and synthetic fuels – while ensuring the modularity and scalability of their platforms.
  • Digitalization as a business model driver:
Connectivity, fleet management, over-the-air updates and predictive maintenance offer new sales and differentiation potential – provided that data is used intelligently and transferred into service-related business models.
  • Increasing efficiency in production and the supply chain:
Production systems must react flexibly to variant diversity, fluctuating quantities and new components. Digitalization, automation and lean programs are crucial to keeping quality and costs in balance.

  • Sharpen global market strategy:
Growth markets such as South America, Africa and Asia-Pacific require adapted vehicle concepts and local value creation. At the same time, geopolitical risks in supply chains and location decisions must be actively managed
