Against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions and security policy responsibilities, the defense industry is becoming increasingly important. Germany, as a NATO member and geopolitically centrally located industrial country, is investing massively in armament and modernization, for example through the “Special Defense Fund” and the significant increase in the defense budget. German companies are leaders in land and air defense, sensor technology, communications technology and defense logistics. The European defence industry is facing a new era, characterized by security policy relevance, accelerated innovation cycles and the need for efficient, internationally networked production.
Industry in transition
What are the current challenges facing the defense industry?
Despite rising demand, the industry is facing structural and operational hurdles: Supply chains have often grown historically, are complex and lack agility. Approval and procurement processes in the public sector are lengthy, sometimes lack transparency and make fast innovation cycles more difficult. At the same time, there is increasing pressure to improve delivery capability, readiness for series production and international cooperation. ESG criteria, digital threat scenarios and changing political priorities require new answers at a strategic and operational level.
Strategy for the future
What is the current need for adjustment and optimization?
In the coming years, the defense sector must be strengthened in terms of industrial policy and at the same time made more efficient from a business perspective:
- Scaling production capacities:
The establishment and expansion of production and integration capacities requires massive investments, partnerships and standardization – for example through modular platform concepts and proven dual-use technologies. - Professionalize procurement and project management:
Agile and transparent management of large programs involving all stakeholders (industry, ministries, NATO, EU) is crucial for efficiency, adherence to deadlines and international competitiveness. - Strengthen technological innovation capability:
Cyber defense, unmanned systems, sensor fusion and digital warfare require technological leaps that can be accelerated through close cooperation with start-ups, research institutions and civilian technology carriers. - Securing global supply chains:
Strategic resilience through nearshoring, second-source strategies and digitized supply chains is necessary to reduce international dependencies and keep safety-critical components available. - Increasing cost awareness and efficiency:
Lean approaches, modular product architectures, systematic investment controlling and digital product development are also becoming increasingly important in the defense sector – especially in multinational projects.
