Industry-specific consulting for

Metal production and processing

For more than 30 years TMG Consultants has been supporting leading industrial companies in the development and implementation of holistic transformation strategies – with a clear focus on sustainability, efficiency and economic success

Metal production and processing is a cornerstone of the German economy. Steel, aluminum, copper and other metals form the basis for almost all industrial value chains – from the construction industry to vehicle and mechanical engineering to electrical engineering. With around 670,000 employees and an annual turnover of over 230 billion euros, the industry stands for both export strength and industrial structural change. The industry is undergoing a transformation towards climate-neutral, digital and resource-efficient production. Those who invest now and act strategically can emerge as winners.

Industry in transition

What are the current challenges in the metal production & processing industry?

The industry is under enormous pressure to transform. High energy prices, the CO₂ intensity of processes, increasing international competitive pressure – particularly from countries with less stringent environmental regulations – and complex regulatory requirements are making the competitiveness of many companies vulnerable. At the same time, new requirements from customer industries (e.g. lightweight construction, recyclability, decarbonization) require technological innovations and investments in new systems and production processes. The shortage of skilled workers and geopolitically unstable raw material imports are further exacerbating the situation.

Strategies for the future

What is the current need for adjustment and optimization?

Companies in the metal production and processing industry need to rethink their business models, value chains and cost structures in a consistent and structured manner:

  • Decarbonization and transformation of the process landscape:
Technologies such as hydrogen direct reduction, electric arc furnaces or CO₂ capture must be scaled up and implemented in an economically viable way. Funding strategies and partnerships along the supply chain are essential.
  • Increase energy efficiency and cost control:
The energy-intensive nature of the industry requires systematic energy efficiency programs, the use of digital energy management systems and long-term energy supply security via power purchase agreements (PPAs) or self-supply solutions.
  • Circular economy and material efficiency:
The use of secondary raw materials, intelligent sorting and recycling processes and the development of closed material cycles are becoming strategic differentiators.
  • Optimize production networks:
Globally distributed plants must be reviewed from a cost, sustainability and supply security perspective and restructured if necessary – using digital twins and data-driven production planning.
  • Operational excellence and automation:
Companies need to further professionalize production, maintenance and logistics processes through automation, advanced analytics and lean approaches in order to ensure quality and throughput while reducing costs.
